There were strands of his hair on my fingers, but it felt like I couldn't wipe them off. But I wanted to run to the first settlement and shout at the windows of the people: I killed him, I killed him, he is no longer alive, he is no longer breathing. He turned blue. It was as if I could see the petrified faces of people, old people, children, women, startling, spitting in their breasts, but not daring to approach the windows. I imagined that they would still stop for a moment, beat on wood, then continue to take care of the fire in the stoves.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2021, the group has 7.000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
