What do I do now? Laugh or cry? The angel fluttered a wing, not turning to me, careful not to burn the coffee. I turned to the window looking out over the rooftops of the sleeping city and didn't feel him coming. The coffee aroma was overwhelming and I surrendered myself to heaven, the one before my eyes. The angel was wearing pyjama pants and a chic smile of a Parisian waiter wanting to surprise you with croissants on the house. Laugh or cry, he told me fondly, but whatever you choose do it from the heart. The rest is history.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In March 2022, the group has 8,050 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
