Hide and seek. All the older boys and I, a rug rat. A voice counts to 10. A forehead resting against an old wardrobe. I fall inside. I hear acidic laughs. Did you put the bugs in? I did, I did. I despise those black non-humans. A rotten kind of nausea boils inside my tummy. Fear smells of ammonia and travels through my hyperventilating nostrils and into my convulsing body. The feeling of thousands of gritty legs crawling all over my skin, scratching with their greedy, thick nails, floods my every thought. There's no way out for me. I pass out.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2022, the group has 9,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
