So he dug that night in the sand, till the creak of his father's death, resounding as the crash of the great mast, was lost in the waves; till the earth's dogs snickered at his nai lwounds with understanding; till he almost saw his mother, whom he remembered only from a lullaby. He dug through wisdom's belly, till she tore out her guts, with a howl. He dug through the foolish squid of the reef. He digs through ages upon ages of the ultimate and only god, who wants us all after his torment and likeness.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2022, the group has 9,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
