I was making plum brandy in my yard. More wood was needed, so I started breaking various stumps. I came across a willow tree from which the ax bounced back like rubber. While I was giving vent to my anger, our neighbour, Gica, turned up and asked if one of us could slaughter her goose. I effortlessly hit its neck with the ax, without realizing that next to me was that parrot of a rooster that sings at the crack of dawn. He got scared and ran, falling into the pot of hot brandy under the still. Witness soup tasted divine.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In October 2022, the group has 9,400 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
