We groped like fools in the dark bedroom after the power had gone out because of the storm. We were both laughing in a muffled way, bumping into all the walls, trying to guide ourselves by the vague light of an almost blind moon. I don't know why we were whispering, we both felt like doing it, and the echoes of our laughter seemed to crack against the bare walls with a crackling sound. When a new flash of lightning lit the window, Rami flicked his index to the opposite corner of the room. There loomed a ceiling-high shadow that was not ours.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In October 2022, the group has 9,400 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
