Before I start my shift, I count the fridges filled in the last day. Five, so that's how many I must have. What, only the woman with twins is in the room? And the one with cerclage and someone else must be coming as well, I'll get them to come today, I will convince them somehow. What? She is calling for me, she needs help, one of the twins is not breathing. And I run, I fly, I can't ruin my balance and my reputation. I move my wings over the hands of the doctors and I blow hard in the little body from which a whimper can finally be heard. I smile, when it's my birthday, everybody is born.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In November 2022, the group has 9,580 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
