Lights out, the movie starts. The most handsome man in the world is sitting next to me. At some point, he takes my hand. I have nothing against it, I enjoy his touch. At the end, we walk out of the cinema, go to the park and sit down on a bench. I lean my head on his shoulder. I feel his warm breath; I lift my head and I give him my lips. We're madly kissing. Time gets stuck in the birches, with his back towards us. My phone rings. I have to go - I tell him. Shall we see each other tomorrow, please? The birches don't have leaves anymore, I'm waiting. Still waiting.

I had reached his house when it was getting dark, I was nervous that we might randomly see each other, but he was gone until the next day, that's what he had written on a note. Ok, I could spend a night alone in this freezing cold and dark place. But he didn't showup for 48 hours, 240, more. I ate his food supplies, saw an aurora, I made myself feel warm with the man next door and I ran out of love right at the crack of dawn, I got tired of the white bear and of the smoked cod and I hid myself to wait for him better. With the rifle in my arms and with an angry pointer finger.

He hastens downstairs the apartment building. He hadn't had enough patience to wait for the elevator. He puts on a smile way too big for his face, from one ear to another, through the sea of pimples which has flooded his face this year. He still has David Bowie, Absolute Beginners in his ears, and his skin smells of her. Nora, his girlfriend. The coolest girl in his classroom, the most beautiful girl in the universe was his, starting tonight. The car brakes sound metallic, the red hood, screams, the wet and warm blacktop, the apple from Nora near his boot. See you tomorrow, baby.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In December 2023, the group has 12,210 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
