under some circumstances that found us at roost in forms of acrobatic attitudes difficult to explain here, we resorted to fluid exchanges whose viscosity increased directly proportional to the level of involvement in what some might call interpersonal relationships. For me, she was the fourth woman to convince me that we were meant for each other, and I the third man she had waited for all her life that year. To be happy together we decided to get married. Each of us with someone else.

I started to fade away little by little. I had been Tavi for everyone, but you called me Octi and that's how it stayed. Then I got a buzzcut because you told me that the long locks that rockers usually wear were old fashioned. I quit smoking cigars because you told me you don't like the smell. I started to watch TV series because I liked you. I replaced Marquez with Coelho so we could have something to talk about. I sold my motorcycle because you don't like how you look like with a helmet on. Today you told me that you are leaving me. I wasn't shocked. I left myself long before you did.

I had a lot of friends on my street, but the number of enemies was not that low either. Handsome, oozing resoluteness and life through every pore. It answered with love to hugs and with tears if you harrowed its body. It was always there when you needed it. Generous. The end began when the malicious mister Aristide moved in across the street, who sent it bad words on a daily basis. Ready and self-sufficient, he pulled some strings and got the notice. Since yesterday, the big and good walnut tree is burning inside the fireplace on Veșniciei street, no. 6.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In May 2024, the group has 13,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
