When I volunteered, they told me there was no trace of life here. However, the truth is different. You would also be fascinated by their centres of activity, cities where swarms of creatures bustle in all directions in a continuous back-and-forth motion. I would tell you more, but my time is limited. The information I provided about you allowed them to expedite the invasion process. I am writing this as I head with my ship for one last trip to the planet where I was born. I will truly miss humans.

The world was not large enough to offer him a palette of choices suitable to his need to find a place he could call home. He wandered the earth like a snail, leaving fragments of himself in his wanderings. Over time, he understood that home was where he arrived in an instant and found someone to love him. One day, he began to gather the pieces of himself scattered along the untrodden paths he had travelled and built them around him. He had collected enough to make an entire city, but he was content with a house.

And over here is the boulevard, says Țâcu, drawing a deep line through the mud, splitting our little town in the garden of block Z8 like an open wound from which worms begin to emerge. Țâcu picks them up one by one and tosses them over the fence to Z6, saying, they're a mess over there anyway, just look at their garden. Is that a town? I giggle and lay my dolls out in the sun. Țâcu wets his finger in his mouth and traces a little park around them. I look at him and think to myself that I will never kiss Țâcu.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In June 2024, the group has 13,100 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
