I thought my father was a circus artist, my mother used to tell him that he joggles and makes a lot of stunts. I loved him very much, he told me stories and we laughed, and my mother told him: you clown, you always make things up. I stood silent between them and I was putting my hands in their palms so they could feel my heart there with all the love from it. This is why I cannot say with whom I want to live, as this lady keeps asking me. With mom and with dad, I scream while my nails pierced my skin, I hope they'll see how blood drops from my heart, but the lady is irritated because the divorce is a circus.

Nephew, do you see this wheat grain? Every seed hides in it a beginning and an end of life. There is a cyclicality in everything. Don't allow yourself to be fooled by smiles. The same lips that are sweet today, tomorrow will break your heart. When they will smile at you, answer them cautiously. Don't be fooled by tears. All of them are just an expression of a soul that you have to get to know. Only then let yourself be known. Before I went blind I didn't understand those things. Now I feel that blindness is also a beginning of light.

She adjusted her kerchief and knelt down. There, the thoughts pounding in her head could be voiced, she could truly be herself. What else had happened since the last time we saw each other, he asked her. How could she even tell him? Father, I carry a great sadness in my heart. At first, he didn't answer. In the air was a meaningful silence. I know that, child, he told her eventually. I don't have it either. God has other plans for you. She got up. She was light as a feather. After a long time, she smiled in the April morning light.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
