Half had been cryogenically frozen and kept into a box invented by the professor. There were a few words handwritten on the lid. This creature is of extra-terrestrial origin and I named him Half, due to his appearance. After he wakes up, he'll do everything is his power to escape. He hates being in captivity. He owns information about advanced technology and, if you manage to give him what he wants, he will trade it with you. Beware. He is a carnivore. Also very important. He is a telepath and heinous.

I got out the house at first light, rushing as if I was late to my own wedding. It was spring. I ran with all the snowdrops, and the wind styled my stubborn curls. At noon it was summer to me. I sat down on the hot grass, with a huge ice cream cone, with all the fruits of the world, and shared it equally with the sun. He smeared it on his rays, and I was up to my elbows in it, and I fell asleep. When I woke up, golden leaves were falling over me. It was autumn. I got up to leave. On the way it started snowing. My curles turned white in a flash. Life is like a cone of ice cream. Sweet. Fleeting.

Have you ever had nitrogen ice cream? I had some from a friend who sells cryosaunas. They say those only work with liquid nitrogen. Check out how they made the ice cream. His wife brought the mixture in a blender, and as she was blending it, my friend poured nitrogen from a tank with a hose. In just one minute, the best ice cream I've ever had was done. And weren't you afraid that would poison you, uncle Grigore? Poor, Mișu. What grades did you get in Chemistry? Don't you know three quarters of the air you breathe contains nitrogen?

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
