I got out of prison on a Friday, and the next day we've all gathered at Sinaia, in our boss' apartment. In the evening, Firiceanu, Popel and I went out for cigarettes. We saw it two meters away, with its snout in a trashcan. Popel pissed his pants, Firiceanu turned white as a sheet and I froze like an icicle. When it stood on two legs, we started running faster than Usain Bolt. Popel was too slow. The bear disappeared into the woods with what remained of him. Did he have any savings? I head Firiceanu.

On my new girlfriend's birthday I offered to pick her up from work and that's when I found out she was working at the Institute of Forensic Medicine. I had a huge lump in my throat, but I showed off so I wouldn't look like a loser, because her colleagues were all buzzing around her. Cautious, I hadn't shaken hands with any of them. Then, my girlfriend treated us with a seasonal dessert which she took out from behind a metallic door. All I remember is how the room turned into a roller-coaster after I saw a pale leg with a tag on its toe sitting next to the box of waffles.

Every time He was upset, the Lord started putting together something up there in the sky. He patched the mosquito nets at the windows, He greased the hinges on the gate, He fixed a wheel on Ilie's chariot, this kind of stuff. When He was about to go in the house, He felt the blood rushing to His head again. Pafnuti, He thundered, didn't I tell you to fill up this hole in the ground? They're staring at us from downstairs. On his knees, with a trowel in his hand, he was preparing to start working, when he saw him. He was even more upset than Him. He widened the hole, turned the trowel into a cone and came down near the child.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
