All the loved ones had a name, they could be called and loved exactly as they pleased, so she began to give a little name to her poultry, with or without feathers, with tail or flowers. One day, the hen called Albus had disappeared without a trace, the next day they were eating good stew and polenta. After that, Micky the blue-eyed duck - nowhere to be found. The next day, he slept on cabbage in the oven. Mommy Star, whom she greeted every night, had fallen too. Look, choose another one, there's plenty. No. I won't give any names to anyone, they all die after. I'm a jinx.

Mona didn't milk the cow, didn't play at the Casino or get married, she just hotly clung to my skin. I had a cold, my entire body had been massaged with rubbing alcohol, and on my head I had a small turban soaked in alcohol, I quietly lay in bed, thoroughly sweating. Wearing my pyjamas as if I were a starfish, I didn't even hear auntie coming into my room, holding that huge syringe full of poldine. Of course I screamed. As a farewell, she said bye-bye, chicken, bye-bye, butt. What was the point of telling her that that wasn't my real name?

When people got tired of houses, cars, planes and jewelry, they started to buy stars. Because I have some small flaws, I belong to no one, forgotten in the sky. To show them that I can be as valuable as the others, I started taking all kinds of classes. After some time, I became the brightest star in the entire Universe, even if sometimes I limped when dancing through the galaxies. One day, the richest man wanted me all for himself. I will never belong to an earthling. I heard they have flaws.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
