Cornel was sweating profusely. His buddy had assured him he was going to have fun at the party. Totally wrong. The others were gyrating lasciviously in front of him, but he couldn't enjoy any of it. The latex suit was cut in the buttocks area and stuck to his skin. He felt like scratching his armpit, but his hands were cuffed above his head. The important thing is to participate, he thought to himself, as he saw a Viking-looking dominatrix approach him with a wooden paddle. What was the safe word?

Five Olympic circles are crookedly stuck to the wall with glue. Made of polystyrene stolen by Pricop from the construction site. On the bed floats a sheet with waves, on which Vera has written Seine with turquoise nail polish. Gilda, Vera and Pric are at the swimming race without swimming costumes. Already the lanes have intersected, you can hear the competitors gasping. When do I enter? asks Panfil. Shut up and hold the torch, I mean that wedding candle. You're not ready, Pric points to the middle of Panfil. Well yes, I've got stage fright, I dropped wax, it's my first Olympics.

Try to make an effort, dearest. Dress neater, more colorful, more feminine. Be nicer, smile more. Talk more, try to be different, more like girls your age. Take part in what those around you are doing. The girl looked at her palms, laid on her lap and kept silent. How could she explain to her mother that getting out of bed in the morning was important to her? That there was no greater effort than that? That she would have given anything if she could get the energy to participate?

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In September 2024, the group has 13,320 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
