I've been here for ten years and everyone knows me as the Man from the Moon. I left Earth for good after my wife cheated on me with a geologist. I vowed to go as far as I could and chose to come and explore the Moon. There are no other beings, I am as single as I can be and I can't wait for the crew to come to supply me. I managed to build a base with all the utilities and that's why it's easy for me. After 8 hours of work, I journal or read, which I did on Earth too, but here it doesn't affect anyone.

I wake up early and go to sweep. I have dust on my clothes all day long. And it is. The silicon rings flutter at perihelion each of the thirteen mornings of the day. I have glasses through which I watch the successive sunrises of the three suns. I shake off the stardust that I pick up with my cosmic broom, of peptides, of ribonucleic acids that will roam to who knows what blue planet where they will sprout life. When I get home in the evening I crack open a milky beer and howl.

In fact, from one month to the next. Do I miss sitting somewhere? Yes, but I get over it quickly. How many people can afford to change their home every month? Or even more often, like yesterday. At first it seemed like a good choice: generous space, welcoming neighbours. After two days they started avoiding me. On the third, I went out for cigarettes and found my things in the street. I was surprised because I hadn't asked for a general cleaning. Then I saw eyes watching me from behind the curtain; the well-known eyes, of: you stinky, take your rags and disappear.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In September 2024, the group has 13,320 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
