He said he loved her deeply and for a long time. He wanted to surprise her by waiting for her one night to get off her shift. He suddenly came out from behind the unlit corner, threatening her with the box with the sapphire ring in his outstretched right hand. Hands up, give me your heart, he shouted. She was startled and slammed the purse into his head. Then she fainted from a heart attack. Now I was with them having a cigarette, downstairs in the hospital cafeteria, they had two days to go before they were discharged. It was his second attempt at a proposal. Get some pepper spray, I suggested discreetly.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In January 2022, the group has 7.830 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
