I'm taking my life in my own hands. It is as it should be. I still have candy wrappers on my desk. Dad still cuts up my watermelon into cubes. I'm not ready to not be a child anymore. On the train, the reflexion in the window is staring at me and I avert my gaze so that I won't have to answer my own questions. To my right, a grandfather with a denim vest unwarps a strawberry chocolate bar and starts eating it. With sincere eyes he offers me some and asks me if I want to be friends with him. I look at myself once more. You cannot simply stop being a child.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2022, the group has 9,000 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes almost daily. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, and Luchian Abel. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
