Daniel Popa
He spent the last day thinking about what he had done. He was lucky there was nobody to point the finger at him. Or to hear him weep and curse himself. His sole consolation was that he hadn't done it for money. To be fair, money hadn't been created yet. But he hadn't done it out of love either. Otherwise, he wouldn't have made some beastly humans who have no idea how they got here, although they certainly know they hate one another. Looking from above, it becomes clear that heaven is here on earth. But, to figure that out, you must see it from a higher angle. Pardon. I meant an Angle. Pardon. Angel.

I'm drenched in sweat as I collect the laundry, wash the dishes, and clean around the kitchen, where he serves his coffee unabashed. A pleasant thrill traverses up and down my body, and I get goosebumps just imagining that he may take the initiative this morning. He greedily savours every movement of mine as I watch to see what he will do, with eyes that burn hotter than the sun. He's faffing to and fro, nothing more. Distraught, I leave the kitchen, but not before leaving a note on the fridge: honey, can you take out that RUBBISH?

This is how I find every day of my life to be. When I was young, I didn't find the time to do what I wanted. Now, I find the time spent waiting for my pension or for my next meal to be too long. When you're hungry, you wish time would reach its end. Once you eat something, you find that life is beautiful, and you find your will to live again. My feet swell up, and I breathe with difficulty. When I went to buy some bread, I found out the cherry plums were ripe. I'll go gather some tomorrow. I hope I'll find some on the lower branches.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
