It was an impossible mission. She walked past me uncaring and she made me feel like I didn't existed. My existence turned into an increasingly desperate attempt to get her to even look at me. My gaze followed her from the moment she walked out the door of the apartment building until she headed towards the parking lot. It was like she was floating, her big dress was swirling and when she got into the car she revealed her long legs which for me was the moment when I realised what I will desire in this world. My mundane wish to give her a pedicure one day.

Since his wife died, I rarely see him around the yard. Sometimes we exchange a few words. We throw them over the fence, then we return to our solitudes. Two null sets, tangent at the same fence. I only jumped over the fence once. Long ago, before the Great Change, when I climbed into his cherry tree. He didn't scold me, he even helped me climb down. I can still feel the stamp of his hands on my new-sprung breasts. I wish he would ask me how would the man I've been waiting for my whole life looks like. I would answer him simply: like you, Simion.

He puts one hand on the back of the man's head and with the other he stroked his neck with the razor: if you make a sudden movement, you'll die. He swallowed hard and he felt the laryngeal prominence flutter under the edge of the blade. An unseen trickle of blood crossed his mind like an imagination. He tilted his head back and ran his hand along the line of the mandible: those are really manly features and what clenched muscles. He closed his eyes. Out of nowhere, a slap made his cheek tremble, followed by another. He covered his face with a hot towel and then shaved him.

Real Fiction is a collective project started in 2013 by Florin Piersic Jr. The concept of Real Fiction continued to exist as a Facebook group, after a volume of stories was published at Humanitas Publishing House. (In August 2024, the group has 13,230 members.) The authors write ultra-short stories, with the texts limited to 500 characters (in Romanian, so the length of the English translation might be a little different) - a flash-fiction exercise on a topic that changes every few days. The group's coordinators are Florin Piersic Jr., Gabriel Molnar, Răzvan Penescu, Luchian Abel, Monica Aldea, and Vlad Mușat. (Drawing by Adrian T. Roman)
