Sărut

Mă săruţi într-o seară geroasă de sâmbătă
lângă Trinity Square
unde adolescenţii fugiţi de acasă petrec
irosindu-şi tinereţea -
braţe acoperite de tatuaje, inimi acoperite
de cicatrici,
guri futute în grabă, clătite cu votcă
"If it's oral it's not sex!"

"Who else would kiss in minus 28 degrees in the snow?"

a unei sfinte virgine

reinventează căldura pierdută demult a uterului.

"Because poetry is what's left when nothing else matters
anymore!
"A curse is a curse even when it was fated!" protestez
"Great image! Keep at it!" îţi aud vocea
îmi dai ocol plin de curiozitate
"And this is common courtesy and just a tiny bit of lust!"

"3rd day is SILENT, 4th day is QUIET," şopteşti
"Always too difficult to open!" mai găseşti
"Cotton, that's the secret!" vociferezi
"You're a very powerful woman," declari
după ce termini de citit
fără niciun pic de ironie deşi
pentru că m-ai prins de mână
mi s-au înmuiat genunchii,
mi s-a tăiat respiraţia,
mi s-au înroşit ochii, împroşcând lacrimi -
dovada maximă a bărbaţiei tale
care-mi anihilează cu voioşie instinctul de conservare
"You can never predict from the last round
how it's gonna go!

"Oh, Canada!"
şi mă întorc la scris.

Kiss

You kiss me on a frigid Saturday night
near Trinity Square
where homeless teens are partying
their youth away
arms covered in tattoos and hearts covered in scabs
rushed blowjobs washed out with vodka
if it's oral it's not sex
and in the morning you can pretend you don't remember.

You kiss me
under the gaze of the cleaning ladies spying on us
while vacuuming the mall's floors
women of all ages with thick accents and rubber gloves
amazed every day
by the stash of used condoms and disposable needles
thrown away in the public washrooms at the Eaton Centre.

You kiss me
surrounded by security guards with Master's and PhDs
from countries where the dollar bill is still a sign of evil
and rich people have long beards
they can't help but take us as adulterers
"Who else would kiss in minus 28 degrees in the snow?"
wishing to cast us on a bed of suffering or better still
have us stoned in the middle of the street by children
without sin
but ready to have their first religious experience.

You kiss me
with the softness of a love poem from the 1600s
until you envelop me in royal blue and a scent of white lilies
a sigh oozes out of me
as frail as the last breath
of a virgin saint
(her light bones crushed by the hungry lion in front of the
cheering crowds
just one more show in the Coliseum
towards the end of the Empire).

You stroke my hair
until my inner child starts
wiggling around
reasserting the pleasure principle and
reinventing the warmth of the long-lost womb.

You hug me
with glass arms ready to break into pieces
at the faintest sign of disapproval
until my marrow starts shivering, blood pressure spikes over 190,
and the desire to have sex becomes the desire
to be.

A Book

You filled me up with words and gave me a book when any other man
would've given me a child
"Because poetry is what's left when nothing else matters
anymore!" you scold me like an overly enthusiastic
motivational speaker
still fighting for people's right to dream and be vulnerable
a miscegenated Don Quixote
singing an aria of love and defeat after he lost his windmills
and Dulcinea del Toboso had to settle for a part-time job
in the sex industry
to pay her student debt
"A curse is a curse even when it was fated!" I protest
faintly
words crawling in each crease of my brain
like an invasion of maggots springing from all the pain
I've been trying to forget
"Great image! Keep at it!" I hear your voice
as you snoop around once again
"And this is common courtesy and just a tiny bit of lust!"
I think, dancing over the abyss in the rhythm of
Miles Davis's Kind of Blue
and writing

Finally impatient, you claim your rights like the seigneur
at the peasant girl's wedding
squinting at my computer screen
in dear need of your reading glasses and a glass or two of red wine
"3rd day is SILENT, 4th day is QUIET," you say
but I don't get it
and showing you my words suddenly becomes more embarrassing
than dropping
my black lace push-up bra with four pairs of clasps
"Always too difficult to open!" you find
one more reason to admonish me
or teasingly pulling aside the silk panties I once worn by mistake
"Cotton, that's the secret!"
to unveil what you still think of as the gate to heaven
"You're a very powerful woman," you say
as you finish reading
without any bit of irony although
just because you grabbed my hand
my knees are weak, my breath shallow, and my eyes
red themselves spitting out tears
the biggest confirmation of your manhood
joyfully tearing down my survival instinct
"You can never predict from the last round
how it's gonna go!" you sigh
already thinking of titles for my book
with the excitement of a father thinking of names for his unborn son

I listen to your voice
solemnly reciting the phone book and the strange words of
"Oh, Canada!"
and go back to writing.
